MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY. By Tcleeroph—l'rees Association, Napier, February 7. The magisterial inquiry into tho lose of the Squall on February 2 was opened last night by Sir. M'Carthy, S.H.. with Captains Lake and. Parsons (a«;esors). Mr. Rose conducted the case for the Marine Department. Captain Vasta said the vessel altered her course on several occasions until Horowera Point had been passed. She struck at 8.30 o'clock. Tho shock was not severe. A few minutes later there was two feet of water in the- boat, winch took a bad list. He ordered tho boats out. .. „ Mr. Coldicutt, tho mate, said the vessel sank within half an hour after she . struck. ' .., , Mr. Brown, second mate, said there was no confusion when she struck. He relieved the captain on the bridge for a quarter of an hour. The captain told him to steer east by south. The vessel was about the usual distance from land. Nalder, an A.8., said he was on. the bridge when the vessel struck. It was a very nasty jar, which swung the vessel outwards. , , The inquiry will bo continued tomorrow. __________
