\ A SOLDIERS' AFTERNOON.' !) Principally with the idea of provid--5 ing some sport for tho soldier-swimmers 7 now in camp, the Thorndon Swimming - Club conducted at Thorndon Baths. on Saturday a "soldiers' afternoon." The baths were thrown open to the public j at tho ordinary charge of admission, and those present wero treated to a good afternoon's sport. The lumpy sea made swimming just a little diffi- ' cult, but the soldiers, especially two — Privates C. Atkinson and H. Clark — registered good xierformances. Tlio olub were specially grateful to the Trentham Band, which played selections during the afternoon, to the Camp Commandant, Captain Bell, Q.M.S. o Warren, and Sergeant Cooper, wlio 2 wero responsible for interesting the sol--0 diers in camp. A committee of ladies (i provided excellent refreshments. 2 The officials were as follow Judges, 11 Messrs. T. lionayne, 1.5.0., H. W. G Harris, and A. W. Smith; starter, A. 1 Shearer; cheok-startcr, G. P. Saunders; call stewards, F. U. Webster, W. ' Lomas, C. Sheehy, and S. Shearer. Tho races resulted as follow: — Teams' Relay Race, 250yds.—Thome don Club, 1; 11th Artillery, 2; Artillery Team, 3. Time, 2min. 43 2-ssec. 50yds. Soldiers' Handicap.—First heat: C. Atkinson, 1; time, 29sec. .Second heat: H. Clark, 1; time, 34sec. Third heat; Grice, 1; time, 33scc. Fourth heat: M'Kialey, 1; time, 31 2-5 in sec. Final: Clark, 1; Atkinson, 2; 12 Grice, 3.
