CHESS
The Wellington South Cliess Club's first championship tourney commences on. Thursday evening, the competitors, chosen from tlie club's ladder, being the eight strongest players available at the present time —Messrs. B. B. Allen, Purchas, Harper, Armstrong, Weine, Thompson, Clark, and Berry. Messrs. AVelton, Loney, and Perrott are unable to compete on this occasion. In the past the players holding the top rung on the ladder lias been the club's champion, and it is_ expected that the new method of deciding the. title annually by a full-round tourney will arouse a wider and more real interest amongst the more seasoned players. A similar beneficial result was, it is understood, attained by the Auckland Chess Club, vrhicli made the same change two years ago in connection with its championship. The winner of the Wellington South championship will bold for twelve | months the gold medal donated by the lion, secretary, Mr. Perrott. It may be added that the members greatly appreciate the kind co-operatioii of the champion, Mr. B. B. Allen, in connection with the change outlined above.
