RECENT GRANTS

ANNUAL GRANT TOTALS £24.137

During the past week the Pensions Board dealt with some 57 applications for pensions. Forty-one claims wero made by soldiers, and sixteen by deendants. Of tho 41 soldiers nine were granted pensions and 21 were awarded allowances for varying periods. Four requests wero declined, and tlio remaining seven applications were adjourned.- •■Of'the sixteen dependants, fifteen were granted pensions and the other was .given an- allowance. 'Hie pensions of the nine soldiers referred to' totalled £390 per annum, and the twenty-one allowances represented a sum of £012. Of the fifteen dependants, five wives were granted between tliem pensions totalling £478 per annum. The annual, payment to the ten other dependants will .amount to £371. Thus the total annual addition to the' pensions during • the week was £1239—an ■ average of about £5.1 for tho twenty-four pensions. The gross figures are as follow:— Soldiers granted pensions 93 Soldiers granted allowances 121 Applications refused 34 Applications adjourned 17 Awaiting investigation 36 Total ..301 Dependants granted pensions ...... 440 Dependants granted allowances... 3 Applications refused 38 Applications adjourned 4 Awaiting investigation 19 Total ; 504 Grand total 805 Pensions granted by the State since the commencement of the war are shown by the following table:— Per annum. Soldiers' (93) £4,805 Wives of soldiers (103) 9,092 Other dependants (337) 10,240 Total £24,137 In. addition to this annual payment, the State has already paid 124 different allowances to soldiers or dependants of soldiers, a total sum of £3359 being disbursed in this manner.
