In his book "My Year of the War," ' Mr. 'Frederick Palmer relates that Sir John Jellicbe received, as a present from South Africa, a broom, to represent his sweeping of the seas. A broom at the masthead of !n\ flagship was the emblem of the Dutch Admiral Tromp when ho set himself to sweep the British irom the seas. Blake, his British adversary, sported a whip. As tho "Spectator" remarks, a broom from tho Dutch, if Dutch South Africans were among the donors of tho gift to Sir John Jellicoe, is a delightful tribute. .
