N.Z. RIFLE BRIGADE
PARADE IN AUCKLAND FINE MILITARY SPECTACLE (By Teleeraph.—Presn Association.] Auckland, February 4.
The finest military spectacle which has been seen in Auckland . since the departure of the Main Expeditionary Force was witnessed this afternoon, when tho 4th Battalion of the N.Z. Eifle Brigade, the 3rd Maori Contingent, and two sections of the No. 2 Kifle Brigade Ambulance paraded through the city. It was intended that the parade should have been followed by an inspection at the Domain cricket ground by the Governor, but owing to heavy rain which set in during the night the authorities decided that the inspection and valedictory speeches should take placo under cover of the sheds on the Queen's Wharf. Thousands lined tho streets as the men marched through; The most conspicuous in their ranks were.the Maori Contingent, with fixed bayonets, the fine physique of the men being commented upon 011 all sides. The troops wero heartily cheered all along the route. When the troops were addressed at the wharf, there was a' distinguished gathering present, including His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool, the Prime Minister, and Mrs. Massey, the Hon. J. Allen, tho Hon. A. Myers, tho Hon. Dr. Pomare, and the Hon. F. W. Lang. In tho course of his speech, the Governor said to,the Native Contingent: "You are going to take your place among your privileged brethren, and among all the members of races of which this Empire is made up." To all the, Natives and to all our riflemen and ambulance contingent attached to tho contingent he added: "I wish you Gotl■sneed." He knew they would do well. They had a great name to uphold, and he knew they would uphold it. , The Prime Minister delivered a stirring address. "We trust that you will do as well as the men already at the front," he said. "It was a splendid tiling to . see members of tho Native race coming forward with tho other soldiers of the Empire, under the grand old flajr under which we live." The fact that tens of thousands of New Zealand soldiers had already gone to the front, and the fact that thousands more were willing to follow their example, proved the determination of the Dominion to do everything it possibly could to assist the Enipire ; , Speaking more, particularly to the citizens, Mr; Massey said that unfounded rumours had <-lone a tremendous amount of mischief. They could deal with ; the enemy first, and thev could deal with their domestic difficulties in tlie way they had been accustomed to, and which he thought was the right and proper way. He wished the soldiers God-sjieed. Speeches were also delivered by the Hons. J. Allen, A. Myers, and Dr. Pomare, and the .Mayor of Auckland.
