MAN DETAINED PENDING INQUIRY While Detective-Sergeant Rawle was examining passports on the ' steamer Manuka, prior to her departure for Sydney yesterday, he observed an altercation between some French soldiers and a man .from the shore, who was apparently being roughly handled, and the detective had to step in to protect him. 011 inquiry, Detective Rawle learned that tho man had been engaged in conversation with some of the French soldiers, who took exception to his demeanour. The outcome of the whole, affair was that tho mail was taken into custody by tho police, to be detained pending inquiry. ' <
