ROW AIRMEN SANK A SUBMARINE
BRILLIANT EXPLOIT OPE NIEUPORT The official communiques some time ago announced the sinking of a German submarine by a British aeroplane off Nieuport. This brilliant exploit was performed by Flight Sub-Lieutenant Yiney, R.N., and a French lieutenant, Do Sincay, attached to the British Flying Corps. Tho two airmen have given the Dunkirk correspondent of the "Matin" a description of how they accomplished the feat. "It was about midday, and we had started about half an hour before, on a French biplane, to look for submarines, whose presence had been reported in the offing. While cruising at an altitude of ten thousand feet, we sighted, west of Nieuport, about five miles from the coast, two submarines navigating on the surface side by side. "We felt pretty sure they could not escape us by diving, as thfc aea is not deep at that spot. ■ Descending in spirals, we selected one for attack. .. Our conjecture was right. It was over' a sandbank, and as it was impossible to escape by diving, it sought to elude us by a hurried flight in zigzag. "Seeing that we should have little chance of hitting it, we turned our attention to the consort, which appeared to answer the helm less readily and could not get out of the circles we described above it. Thus we descended to 050 feet above the surface, and then, certain of our aim, we dropped the first bomb, which took effect. liven with the naked eye it was easy to see the serious damage done to the deck. Two more circles above the doomed submarine, then the second bomb, and she broke in two and sank.
"There was' no time to be lost in returning to Dunkirk, as the other enemy submarine might give, the warning and bring a swarm of aircraft to cut us off. So we rose immediately, though keeping our eyes fixed on the spot whore tho submarine bad disappeared. What wo saw removed all doubt as to its fate. An ever-widening sheet of oil was spreading over the surface, and told us all we wanted to know."
