NOTES AND COMMENTS
' IBt -3i,encoe.l Matters are very quiet on the Trenthain tracks since the recent meeting. "Most of the horses working there have just come in.from a few days' spell, and since the meeting very little fast work has been done. %
Weights for the Woodville meeting are duo on Monday, and acceptances closo on the following Thursday.
Tho Hawera Stakes, one mile, of JlflO, only drew three runners; yesterday, and of these one stable supplied two. This would be very disappointing to tho club, who will lose money over tho race. During the last few years tho wcight-for-ago events havo produced bettor contests than previously, .but the Hawera Club is'uni'ortuiiato that its meeting comes on just when most ■freight-for-age horses are feeling the effects of the grueling they voceivo at tho holiday meetings and also at Trentham,
There will be no racing to-day, but tomorrow tho Gisborne meeting will bo brought to a conclusion, and the C.J.C. Midsummer Meeting will also be got off.
When Snub reappeared on tho tracks at Riccarton after a few days' • spell he was found to bo very stiff in his movements, find it is now thought that ho will not bo seen out . again until tho Dunedin Cup meeting. Acceptances for the Taranjki meeting are duo to-morrow night. A unique coincidence in connection with the. weights issued for the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup is that the adjustments for both races are headed by mares, Traquetto and Carlita. . .But for the war, Cherubini would now be in the Government stud in Germany (says a Sydney writer). He was practically sold to a representative of the German Government at a high figure just about the time that the war was declared, and nullified the transaction. The foreigners were hero in search of classic winders, and Cherubini, haviiig won the New Zealand Derby, was chosen. The good-looking black horso Bimeter won both weight-for-ago races at Hawera. His success yesterday was the first achieved by him over a mile course. The son of Malster 'has now won close on £1500 in stakes this season. The^two failures of Bertrada at Egmont must be causing licr trainer a lot 'of thought. On the tracks the mare gallops well, but either sho cannot, or will not, repeat it in her races.' In this reject she is tho reverse of lier sister, Carlita, wbo is a poor track worker, but very free with the colours up. This will probably be Bertrada's last season on tho racecourse. It is. not. often that the two big events fail to tho' same liorso on both days of a meeting, but this is what occurred at Hawera. -tin the opening day Astor scored iu tho Flying Handicap, with 7st. 41b., and yesterday ho repeated tho performance -with an additional 121b. In the Cup Merry Roo sailed homo with 9st. 21b., and a rise of 1011). failed to stop lier on the second day. It will bo interesting to see how tho Auckland mare is treated in the Taranaki Cup.
It has been definitely decided that the champion trotter, Our Thorpe, will leave for . America early in March in charge of liis trainer, A. Fleming.
A writer in tho "Referee" this week makes tho astonishing assertion that there is a fall of forty feet from tho start to the finish of-tho straight, six furlongs, at Trentham, and he even quotes a known JI.'P. as; his authority. This is, of course, absurd. There is a fall certainly, but it is less than one-fifth of what tho southern writer - states.
Owing to tho disorganised boat service to Gisborne, sovoral sportsmen who wished to visit the meeting had to stay-away. xV number of riders were also compelled to cut out tho meeting, but the Aucklanders, J. Buchanan jmd W. Ryan, took tho tram to Nnpier and motored from there. RACING FIXTURES. Feb. 3 and s.—Gisbonio E.C, Summor. . Feb S.—C.J.C. Summer. l.'eb! 9 anil 10.—Taranaki J.C. Autumn.
