MASTERTON NOTES
An inter-Wairarapa shield competition is to be fired on the I'atwwai range on Saturday. It is expected that about half a dozen rifle clubs will be represented. The heat experienced in the Wairarapa during the last live days has been, intense. The lowest registration oil any day was_S4 degrees. Oil Tuesday the reading in Masterton was 87 degrees. A five-roomed house at Ilukanui, owned by Sir. J'.-C. liunter and occupied by Mr. J. Wilson, was destroyed by fire oil Mondiiy night. The Mauriceville County Council is increasing the wages of its roadmen by sixpence per day. A .sum of £41 Bs. lias already been collected to defray the cost of tho soldiers' luncheon at the Mastert-on show on February 16. The Maoris of the Wairarapa are nominating candidates for the north and south in the coining queen of the earnival competition. A hop, step, and juni'o event in connection with the Amateur Athletic Club was won on Tuesday evening by W. Land, and a high jmnp handicap by F. Kilminsteiv
