THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS.

Sir,—ln a letter written in reply to mine, wliicli appeared in The Dominion the 27tli of last month, "li. Fair" write 6 from Wanganui and asks to bo allowed to correct some inaccuracy in my letter. I would respectfully beg to point out that instead of correcting any inaccuracy in my letter he makes inaccuracies in Lis own. In the first place, ho says thtffc Wanganui Collegiate School lias more English University men 011 its staff than Christ's- College. This is incorrect. Secondly, his letter gives one the impression that I stated that Christ's College was the only school in New Zealand which prepared for the Homo universities. I'nis is wholly erroneous. What I said was that Christ's Collego was the only school in the Dominion where boys can be specially prepared for the English Government examinations, and I still contend that this is the ease. Certainly, now and then a boy with speoial genius may pass the examinations from another school. How many of those from Wanganui in th£ English services entered "direct" from the _ soJiool. The resemblance which Christ's College bears to an English public school oompared to any other colonial school is of marked difference. Christ's College has an altogether different atmosphere -about it, and that indefinite air of an English ,school such; rs Clifton, or Tonbridge. Much of this may be probably due to the .English settlement and tone of Canterbury. In conclusion, 1 would ask your Wanganui correspondent "B. Fair" to be what he signs himself, and be fair, giyirig honour to whom honour is due.—l am, etc., ENGLISH PUBLIC SCHOOL. Wellington, February 2, 191 G.
