MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A FAMILY "DISPUTE. Mr. AY. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at yesterday's sittings of the Magistrate's Court, when a married man, named William "Williams, formerly a sea'captain in the Old Country, was charged with using obscene languago in Owen Street, and with using threatening behaviour. From the evidence it appeared that he became truculent on account of tho fact that his family had stopped his allowance of pocket money. He was convicted on both charges, and fined.a total sum of £3. Default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment, but' the sentence will not be enforced if the defendant makes an effort to pay the money within fourteen days. Subsequently summonses were dealt with concerning the question of Williams's maintenance. He proceeded against his family for an allowance, and his wife took proceedings to gain a separation. Tie Magistrate granted the separation, but made an order against two of the sons for the maintenance of: their father. _ The eldest son was ordered to contribute 10s. per week, and the second son to contribute os. per week.

, THE PAKEHA'S CREW-:' y Five duly-articled seamen on ' the steamer Pakeha, namely, Daniel Gridwait, John Morris, Robert. Campbell, William M'Loskcy, and Lawrenco 'Eosfsiter, were convicted of disobeying the lawful commands of the chief engineer. In every case the Magistrate ordered the defendant to pay 7s. costs, and to •be placed aboard the steamer. - Two other members of tho crew of the Pakeha—Colin M'Kinnon and James Burns—were convicted of being absent from the steamer without leave. Each was fined 10s., and ordered to pay Court costs 7s. OTHER OASES. < Francis Joseph Roberts, who was greatly in arrears with payments due under an order for the maintenance of his wife, was sentenced to a months' imprisonment. The Magistrate directed that the warrant should be suspended so long as the defendant made weekly payments of 15s. per week.' Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for tho complainant. For assaulting Albert Brewer on Tuesday last, Michael O'Connor was lined £3, in default to undergo fourteen days' imprisonment. Defendant -was allowed a fortnight in which to find tho money. 1 Four first-offending inebriates were also dealt with.
