The mystery of the missing West African liner Appam has developed into one of the sensations of {he war. The big Elder-Dempster liner has just arrived at Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A., under a German prim crew, and with some members of the crew of the overdue Australian trader, Clan MaoTavish, on board. Her arrival has cleared up the mystery attaching to the disappearance of several steamers, all of which appear to have encountered their fate at the hands of a German sea. rawer, -or operating on the trade routes off'the West African coast. The United States Government has now had added to its radons international perplexities the question of ' determining the status of the Appam. A Norwegian newspaper declares that there has boen an extraordinary manifestation of naval activity off the Norwegian coast; naval fleets-British and German-have been seen cruisin? outside territorial waters, and there aro indications of an imminent encounter. Up till one o'clock this morning there has been practically no news of any importance from the Near or Middle East, and not a line either from the Russian or Western theatres. The official reports on the latest Zeppelin raid on England show that the raiders covered a, wide area, but did no material damage, though over fifty people were killed, and sixty odd Wounded. ■ :
