Mrs. Eleanor Cooper, who died at her residence in Shakespeare Road on Monday, was Napier's oldest resident. At the time of her death- she was within a month and one day of her U4th birthday, and had lived during the reigns or hve British sovereigns—King George IV, William, Victoria" Edward, and George V. In spi.te of her great age the deceased was m full possession of all her faculties up to within an hour or two of her death. She was born at Henley-on-Thames in the days when it cost Is. to send a letter from there to London, 32 miles away, and when the inhabitants would not set • out on the journey m the old stage coaches unless P rev iously mado their wills. All the conveniences of modem life, including telephones, steamers, electricity etc., were quite unknown. The late Mrs. Cooper arrived in Auckland with her husband in 1860, and saw the troublous times with the Natives up north. Later deceased removed to Mongonwi, but soon after came to Napier, arriving here in 1874. She came to this country on the old Blue Jacket, a. sailing vessel belonging to the White Star Line. The deceased lady is survived by Mr. S. E. Cooper (of Napier), Mr. W. H. Cooper (of Terapatiki), and Mrs. Geo. Nicholson.
