MASTERTON NOTES
The police officers at Masterton havo commenced the collection of the agricultural statistics, a work that iias hitherto been entrusted to special officers appointed by the Agricultural Department. A metal repairs contract recently let by the Masterton County Council was £90 15s. lOd. in excess of the price paid last year for the same work. Small birds are playing havoc with Masterton fruit orchards this season. Not only have they destroyed small fruits, they are now attacking plums and apples. The rainfall registered in Masterton for the month of January was 2124 inches. Rain fell on eight days during the month. A proposal is to he submitted to the Masterton County Coilncil at its next meeting for the purchase of a steam rpad-roller. ' An up-to-date picture palace is about to be erected on a prominent site in the main street of Masterton. The vital, statistics of Masterton for tho month of January were as follow: — Births, 23; Marriages, 10j deaths, 3. One bankruptcy (that of a Maori) was recorded in the Wairarapa during th<j month of January.

Welch, labour agent, Masterton, requires navvies, post splitters, gardeners, station hands, general servants, etc. Shareholders of the Equitable Building Investment Company of Wellington, Ltd., are reminded that the annual meeting will he held at the Chamber of Commerce this evening, at eight o'clock. •
