Farewell Function at Paliiatua. A very pleasant, little function took plaec at the residence of the mayoress (Jlrs. J. D. C. Crewe), Paliiatua, yesterday, when the intimate friends of Sirs, and Miss Falconer met to bid them farewell oil the'eve of their departure from Paliiatua. Mrs. J. D. C. Crewo and Miss Grogory were the hostesses, and they received their guests in tlio drawing-room, which was prettily decorated with pink and mauve sweet peas. Several snugs and recitations were sung and recited during the afternoon, the performers being Misses Mooro, Recce, and Beatrix Tosswill and Master Ben Tosswill. After after--310011 tea was dispensed, Mrs. J. D. C. Crowe, on bohalf of Mrs. and Miss Falconer's friends, in an appropriate little speech presented tlio former with an armchair, and the latter with a silver serviette ring, wishing them at the same time good luck ajid happiness in their new home. Mrs. Tosswill responded on behalf of her mother and sister. Among those present were: Mesdames Tosswill, Eames, Hart, Johansen, Wakeman, G. C. Miller, Tulioch, Hay, G. Moore, M'Sherry, 0. Avery, Carpenter, N. Avery, Cornelius, Weston, G. Swaiuson, Mexted, 'White-Scott, J. Thomas, Misses Moore, Recce, and others.

Marist Brothers' School Sale of Work. His Graeo Archbishop Redwood opened a sale of work ill the Marist Brothers' School in llawkestone Street last evening. The proceeds arc to be devoted to tho renovation funds of tho school, and in performing tho opening ceremony His Graco apologised lor tlic absence of Dean Regnault, who had liact to leavo for tlio north. Thoro was a very largo attendance of the public, and tho many active workers who were assisting in various ways lost few opportunities of assisting the cause for winch the bazaar was organised. There were tho usual stalls tor sweets, produce, plain and fancy-work, etc., and several raffles of articles ol : every kind materially added to the funds. Tho stallholders were as follow: —Produce, .Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. M'Mannaway, assisted by Misses Blake; Payne, .and Mrs. Mannering; fancy stall, Mrs. Bolton and Mrs. Keefo, assisted by Miss Sheridan,' Misses Dignan (2), Miss D. M'Mahon Prendorgast, and Miss Campbell; ice cream and sweets, Mrs. Sonnncrville, assisted by tho Misses Tiller (2) and O'Malley. A musical programme had been arranged by Mr. Sievers, and ail interesting and clever display of illusions and conjuring was given bv Mr. Oakley. Mrs. Ames and Miss Taylor foretold tho future. The bazaar is to be continued tin's evening and to-morrow evening, and for each niglit a series of attractions liavo been arranged.

N.Z. Natives' Association. A mooting of the New Zealand Association Ladies' Guild was held at tho association rooms on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. M'Vicar was in the chair. Tho secretary reported that tho social held oil Wednesday last was a financial success, and with tho proceeds the guild can extend its sphcr.o of usefulness. Those in 'charge of tho weekly sixpenny lovy reported the taking of fruit twice a week to the Victoria Hospital. _ Tho reports of sifldiors placed in private homes through 'lie guild was very satisfactory, both from the hostesses and the soldiers' point of view.

The Sewing and Knitting Committee reported upon the distribution of garments as well as upon tho supply in hand.

New Work for Women. The war lias opened quite a number of new avenues of employment for women, many of whom are taking .np responsible positions formerly occupied by young men who have either gone or are going to fight the battles of the Empire. In this connection the clerk of Titrce Point Road Board, in the Daniiovirke district, lias enlisted, and his position is now being filled by a Taranaki lady, Miss Hilda Drake, who for over three years, has been employed on the clerical staff of the New Plymouth Sash and Door Factory and Timber Company, Ltd. The appointment of a lady to control the affairs of an important road board is thought to be the first of its kind in the Dominion, and will bo maintained during the period of the war.

Sailors' Friend Society. Mrs. 31. A. AVilliams opened a salft of work which was held in tlio Institute of the Sailors' Friend Society in Wliitmoro Street yesterday afternoon, in aid of the'lnstitute ftmds. Contributions to the stalls had been sent in liberally by friends of the society, and many attractive and useful articles were included among their contents. Several sido shows had been organised, and they provided much amusement to enterprising people. In tlio evening a concert was given by Miss Stairmaiul and her pupils. Mrs. 0. E. Bolitlio, the goneral organising secretary of the Australian Women's National League, Melbourno, is visiting Wellington, and is the guest of her cousin, Mrs. C. Earle. The Women's Anti-German League has taken a Mom in Hannah's Buildings, where the official work will be carried on. The wedding took place at the residence of the bride's parents, Wanganiri, last week of Mr. Charles F. de Berry, eldest son of Mr. F. de Berry, of Gonville, to Miss Irene ' Taylor, youngest daughter of Mr. W. H. Taylor. The bridegroom has enlisted for ser-. vice at the front. The wedding took place ill Masterton on Monday of Miss Mabel Emily Newland, daughter of Mrs. Ncwland, of Masterton, to Mr. Adolph Lynch Goldfinch, eldest daughter of Mr. Alfred Goldfinch, of Palmerston North. The Rev. G. T. Brown, M.A., of Palmerston North, performed the ceremony.

Miss Ethel S. Jones, formerly a member of the staff of "The Press," who has been engaged (hiring the last three years in sub-editorial work on the "Sporting and Dramatic Review," Auckland, has joined the literary sta/f of the Auckland "Star." The children of the Salvation Army Orphans' Home, returned to town yesterday after spending three weeks' holiday at Rona Bay. Tho matron wishes to thank the residents of tho bay for the onjoyablo time they accorded tho children during their stay there. Miss Helen Mackenzie, daughter of the High Commissioner for New Zea'and, .writing from London to a Cbristchuroh lady, stated in her letter that thero ivas a large demand for New Zealand papers from the men in the hospitals all over the British Isles, also from those soldiers who are on furlough, and the supply was not nearly large enough for the demand. Returned Soldiers' Receptlcn,

Owing to tlie uncertainty which attended the arrival of the Mararoa in Wellington yesterday morning from the south with the northern contingent of the soldiers who were returning to New Zealand hy the "Willochra from tlio front, thero was not so large a gathering of the public as is usual upon such Occasions, the reception had originally boon timed for half-past ten, but through the fog, whicli had dehivod 'operations at the other end, tho soldiers were not able to make their arrival at the Town Hall until about a tltiartor to one,, a somewhat awkward hour for the attendance of a large number of people, in suph a business centre as Wellington, Nor.was there such a large number of men to welcome this time,, as the Auckland section was taken direct to the station to catch tile Main Trunk express,' and the southern men did not of courso come to Wellingtfcn. The onlookers were able to tako comfort ift the fact that these returned soldiers bore few visible marks of wounds, as they were largely enteric cases. • More than one comment was made, however, upon the youth of somo of them, and tho -impossibility of boys of 18, 19, or 20 withstanding the attacks of disease through their immaturity in the warfare they were called upon to faco.

Flowers in profusion decorated tho stage and the small tables on the floor of the ball, at which refreshments were served to tho soldiers by the Mayoress's Entertainment Committee, drapings of flags also adding a vivid note to tho decorations. Occupying seats upon tho platform were the Ris;ht Hon. the Premier, with Mrs. Massey, the Mayor and_ 'Mayoress, the Hoii. James Allen, Sir Joseph and Lad> Ward, tho Hon. Mr. Herdman, the Hon. Mr. Russell, Miss Robin, and others. The customacy speeches of welcome were made and hearty cheers given to the returned soldiers. On this occasion the returning nurses were conspicuous by their absence, the greate number of them having remained in the south.
