FEILDING SHOW
! /.-I A GREAT SUCCESS ; THE CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS ,: I3y 'JTelegraph.-fipeciar.Correspondent.) •i Feilding, ■ February' 1. ' The Feilding A. and P. Association '• were favoured with beautiful weather ; for the first day of the annual show, xhioh-- this year is being held for patriotic purposes. The exhibition on the .whole is well up to other years, cattle s ;'and horses filling up remarkably well. v .There, is, however, an appreciable falling off in sheep classes, the reason, it is as- ; certaiued, being due r to the fact that the ( fanners have.vjbeeii- getting such big i prices" for fat' ilambs that they', have i ; been rushing .tKem, along to j.the't'reez- 1 ;ere. . Feilding.'has al-vays. prided,:itsolf upon having the main fat stoek show of the Dominion, and though the entries.: ' 'are fair in number this year, there is I ' , no'depreciation in quality; hi fact Ifat' i sheep,',.and lambs have, never .come fpr- „ .ward) "in better condition., the ;magnifi-. ' cent season and abundance of feed be- • ■ ing responsible for this happy state of ; affairs. The quality of the stock clicit- : ed warm. praise from the judges, and ; compliments were passed which must ■■ Shave been very gratifying to the exhibitors, and a commendation,of the stock in. the district.- ■ . Cattle Classes. j: . Tsie-cattle classes, contrary to _ exf- pc<jtations, made a decidedly satisfactory showing, Jerseys predominating in' s the dairy breeds. Holsteins had a. good ;! representation, also milking Shorthorns, ; and it is quite evident that this dual purpose animal has come to stay in-this. ■ district as the result of its butter-fat producing quality. Indeed," even in ; Toianaki the milking Shorthorn is fe- ! cognised as a'first-class cheese cow, and . is making good headway, there being a : big demand just now for pedigree'bulls. ' The exhibits to-day certainly show that in-Feilding very satisfactory progress . is ; . being made iii the type of animals being bred. Sheep Classes. Hire sheep pens were well filled. Bom- !. 'jiej Marsh gaining premier position as I usual. In the purebred classes there .was very ' keen competition among some of our best breeders, the main awards goi ing to G. E. Allen, Wairarapa; 3. Corpe and W. Gibson, Kiwitea. In Lini coins, P. Bremer was the main exhibitor, and secured 1 the championship for ; a ewe, D. G. Forlong winning the ram I championship, S." Shepherd being a good runner-up. English Leicestcrs were well • represented by S. R-. Lancaster's,flock, ! .whilst in Southdowns J'. Knight- and : ; Ellis Bros, were the only competitors. 1!. IWith regard to this breed of sheep, | which-is -regarded by many as so essential to success in the fat lamb trade, I regret is oxpressed that there was not . more competition. Championships.
