NOTES AND COMMENTS

18l QLE.tCOE.T The Hawera Jockey Club;will hold its Summer . Meeting on the Egmont course on Wednesday and Thursday. The Gisbovno meeting will open on Thursday. ; i The Takapuiyi meeting will be brought to a 'conclusion to-morrow. Tho acceptances appear *on this page. Those who were present at Takapuna on Saturday slate that St. lewis, who once paid u. very big price in a hurdle race on this course, was unlucky not to defeat Tenacious. tlandicapper G. Morse evidently subscribes to this idea as he has only penalised Tenacious 31b. as compared with St. Lewis for to-morrow's 1 race. As is usual on tho Takapuna course, there were several falls on Saturday, ami one horse, Ngapoto, ■■•.•as killed', but the all esc.aped injury. "Racegoers are asking when the promised alterations to this courso are to be put in hand. According to all accounts, both Ulster Lupin and Dcniso Orme were unlucky in their engagements at Takapuna on Saturday, and they are likely to improve considerably when next they are seen out. T. I'ritchurd left Opaki yesterday with Lady Black, who is engaged in tho open event at tho Egmont meeting. The starters in the Egmont Stakes tomorrow will include a representative from the Yaldhurst and Cliokabore stables, whilo Messrs. J. B. Hcid and G. D. Greenwood will also have horses engaged. Desert Gold will not bo a starter. Crown Pearl, who has been off the scene for a considerable time, will make his reappearance in the WWireroa Welter Handicap at Hawera to-day. As his usual pilot, A. Oliver, will havo to ride Bcrlrada, S. lieid will probably be given the mount on Crown Pearl. If Bimeter is a starter in the Flying Handicap at Egmont, the black foil* of Malster will be much in demand. Considering the circular shape of tho Hawera track, Deeley will probably take his mount to the front at barrier rise, and let tho others catch hiiu if they can. The Wangomii trainer. V,'. Ita.yner, is credited with working considerable improvement' in the Muniopoto gelding, Mahlstick. At different limes this horse lias shown'his trainer good gallops on the track, but .so far be has not run up to it in public. The field he is meeting in the Purse at Egmonfc is not a strong one. Byron, last year's winner of the Eginoiit Cup, will be ,t runner in tho same event to-morrow, and will bo ridden by G. Clarke. Pariform is being tried over hurdles at Awapuni, ami is stated to be jumping well. G. Price does not generally trouble himself with jumpers, and Aorangi was the last ono to carry the Highden livery. Owing to the postponement of the Takapuna meeting, Mr. C. O'Connor will be unable to officiate at tho barrier to-mor-row, as lit is engaged at the F.gmont meeting. Probably Jlr. F. Edwards will tako liis place at the North Shore meet ing.« If The Toff is saddled up for the Middle Park l'lato next Saturday it will be interesting to see how he shapes against Nones. AVcights for tile AVangamii Cup and tho principal events to bo decided on tho opening day of tho Waiißauui meeting are due on February 11. In sporting circles Emperador is a warm order for the Egniont Cup. He is certainly very leniently treated and has already P"t tho event to his credit, winning in 1911 under Bst. (ilb. Hi'. W. J. Ralph intended sending El Gallo south lo tako his place in the field for the Egihont Cup, but! the postponement of the Takapuna meeting, at which Air. Ralph acts as honorary judge, and other circumstances, caused an abandonment of the trip. El Gallo has been nominated lor the Wanganui Cup, and, provided the' weights are suitable, he will h& t/Ueu south, for. .that c.veut,
