STATUES PROTECTED BY CAGES., Visitor's to Venice now would find the famous Italian city very different from what it appeared before war was declared between Italy and Austria. One of the first things they would notice would bo tho remarkable iron cages which cover in many of the beautiful statues of the City of Canals. These cages are practically bomb-proof. Another thing that would strike them would, be the many buildings .which are protected by thick armour-plate. To these buildings have been transferred the most valuable contents of the Venetian museums. Places like St. Mark's and the well-known Doges' Palace have not only been protected by thousands of sandbags, but, w.kero necessary, specially constructed masonry shelters Save been built round tho more beautiful parts of these buildings. All the paintings of Italian masters, tho most valuable paintings in the world, and the biggest, too, havo been taken from their frames and rolled in gigantic iron cylinders and stored away in safety.
