The Minister of Education (Hon. J. A. Hanan), in addressing a deputation last week, combated the idea favoured in some quarters that certain work associated with the progress of tho State should be stopped on account of the war. For instance, ho remarked, there were some who thought that medical inspection of schools could well stop during the war on the Bcore of economy. Of course he could not countenance such a thing. It would be false economy. The reduction of expenditure in this and other matters like primary education would mean that! the children of workers, among otlisrs, would be deprived of benefits they should receive. Tho workers were sharing but little in tho prosperity of the country, which it was alleged was duo to the war; and though it was impossible to direct that somo of the wealth which it was said had bcon derived by "wool kings" and others should go into the pockets of tho workers, tlie least we could do was to see that the health and education of the children were looked after, More money, said Mr. Hanan, was wanted, and there was no reason why those who had benefited greatly in this country as a result of the >vrir should not contribute a little more to the tost of the government of tliis Dominion, soth'at notional needs, in the direction indicated, should not bf! menaced.
