NOTES AND COMMENTS 18l fjtESCOS.I _ Acceptances for the C.J.C. summer meetclose on Thursday next. Eginont Cup meeting will be held on Wednesday and Thursday next. - The Takapiuia meeting, which has been postponed twice on account of the weather, will bo opened to-day,.ami concluded on Monday. The liokeby—ltanee Nuna two-year-old colt, owned by Mr. R. Acton-Adams, accompanied the Porirua team to Trentham lor educational purposes. He was a late foal, and has not Ueen in worlc long, so his owner does not intend to race him this season. The first-class programme issued by the Woodville District Jockey Club should be the means of attracting big entries for the autumn meeting, to bo held on February 1G and 17. Secretary E. J. Gothard will take nominations up till 8 o'clock on Monday night. i Taking a line through the running of Want at the .Foxton meeting, it would look as if Taringaniutu would have won the Foxton Cup had she been raced there" instead of at Trentham. At Tauherenikau on the second day Want was run-ner-up to Taringaniutu in the big handicap at a.'difference of 301b. and an allowance of 31b. would hardly have reversed the positions a.t Foxton', where Want ran .Rataiia to half a length in the Cup. J. Hughes, who lias been associated with the stables of H. Telford and J. Gravestock, is leaving next week for Manakau, where he will take charge of Want, Need, and Parewanui for tlie sportsman who races as "Mr. G. Tenfold." The renort that Trainer J. W. Scott intends leaving 1 Trentham proves to be wrong. Maltegart's is being sold to dissolve a partnership, but her box is being filled bj- the hurdle mare Fashion Plate, ,while bcott is also receiving a couple of additions to his team from the Wairarapa. '

Amongst the winners at Warwick Farm on January 15 was the chestnut filly Contented (Achilles—Berceuse), a full-sister to Hushabye. She scored in the Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs, and started a rnuk outsider. -'Amongst the unplaced division was Mr. E. J. Wfttfs Indian King (Mountain'King—Bee Bee). The riding of M'Lachlan on the last-named did not suit the stipendiaries, who informed the rider that though opposed to the unnecessary flogging of two-year-olds,, it was desirable to show ' vigour for a little distance before sitting lip on a, seemingly beaten two-year-old. 'Die Wnnganui Jackson Stakes is the next classical event of any importance in the North Island. The champion filly Desert Gold is not engaged, and will probably not be asked to carry; silk again until the Wellington Eacing Club's autumn meeting. Here is an excellent example for wealthy New Zealand owners:—At the commencement of last season's racing in Ireland, Mr. K. Croker announced his intention of giving the whole of the stake-money won by- his horses to the Eed Cross Society's l r und.' The fund benefited substantially. Mr. Croker's horses winning 15 races of a total value of JJIDS7 IBs. Mr. Croker is the owner of tho stallion 'Orby (winner of the 1007 English Derby), who has sired a number of smart sprinters, uud in Australia has one fair representative in Flash of Steel. At Kembla Grange, New South Wales, this month, the Newton 'Handicap, one mile, was won by Lalla, by Obliged©— Cyrenaiea, who goes back to Mermaid. Lalla is a five-year-old sister to Tripoli, a useful performer on Auckland tracks. Mr. E. J. AVatt's Atlienic, by Traquair —Arajoel, carried lOst. 81b. and won the Pace Welter at Warwick Farm, Sydney, on January 15. Athenic was a brilliant performer at two and three years, but he went amiss and had a spell. He is evidently coming back to his best form, however, as he has run. well several times lately, and he may have to be reckoned with in some of the big sprint events at the autumn meetings. The acceptance recoived for the Eemont Cup is a poor one, ond out of the sixteen horses handicapped only seven owners have paid up for their horses. This is a poor response for a .£SOO stake. As Battle Eve has been taken to Egraont he will not be a runner in the Middle Park Plate. Sir Geo. Clifford will probably rely upon. 'WnrrfSler (AntagonistElusive) for the weight-for-age event. Wrestler had a great reputation as a galloper in private, but, like his sire, he is very flighty. Byron and Court Martial are the only horses engaged in the Egmont Cup next week that faced the starter in tho same event last year. On that occasion Byroii won and Court Martial was unplaced.

It not enrtaiu that Emperador, a non-stayer at any time, will be a runner in tho Egmont Cup, as he is engaged in the Egmont Stakes six furlongs, run on the same day. The Charlemagne II gelding won this race last year. R ACTNCTF IX TUR Es, Feb. 2 and 3.— Egmont R.C. Summer. Feb. 3 and s—Gisborne H.C. Summer, Feb' S—C.J.C. Summer.
