HEAVY ATTACK ON ITALIAN FRONT
* The recent qufekening interest and keen controversy over tlie question whether the British blockade of Germany is'really effective have culminated in a resolution being tabled in tho House of Commons ; to this Sir Edward Grey lias replied, ill a lengthy statement, in whicli the Government's policy is defended. Dr. E. J. Dillon, the wellknown publicist, has contributed to the blockade controversy an y article in the "Fortnightly" severely condemning the Government in general and the Foreign Office in particular, and concluding with a remark which leaves the reader >wondering how much the writer really knows concerning that which) ho hints. Labour's attitude on the war, as summed up in a resolution adopted at the Congress, is to waive for the time being its dm like to compulsory service and assist the Government to win the war. German activity in the Western theatre continues, inspired, it is suggested, by the' advent of tho Kaiser's birthday this week, but there have been no material developments, and in the meantime we ha ve. recovered the grouud which was seized by the onemy in their attack the other day. The Montenegrins have .now adopted guerilla tactics, but the commissariat problem is persistent and urgent. The Turks are rushing reinforcements to the Caucasus, fearing the severance of their communications with Mesopotamia. Further reports of fighting with. the Senussi Arabs are to hand, telling of the de struotion of a large camp. There were some casualties to the British, New Zealand, and Indian troops engaged.
