Between each half-hutment in the hew camp there is a drying space, which is divided into two compartments by' a partition of expandedl metal. Tho stove that provides the heat for drying tho uniforms is situated midway in an opening in the partition, so that it can be fed with fuel by men on either side. But there is no other means of communication between the two drying rooms, though the' men can, of course, see and talk to one another through the wide meshes. On Monday some soldiers wanted to go from their half-hut-ment to the ono beyond the drying rooms. Seeing a door they thought they could go through that way. Suddenly, however, the man in the lead stopped and turned about. "What's up?" he was asked. "Wire entanglements," he replied. "Lifantry retire, till the artillery has demolished them." They trotted outside and away round to the door at the side. The Dead Blokes' Poem. Soldiers going into new quarters are like schoolboys, except that their spirit of mischief is tempered by their rigid training in discipline. But their sense of humour is given free rein. A believing sort of soldier was much struck by the fact that a separate room or cubicle is provided for tho n.c.o in charge of each half-hutment. It is situated just inside the door, contains a stretcher and table, and is used as the orderly room. "What's it for?"-the simple one asked. The answer appeared to surprise him.
"That's for the men that pegs," a cfaeery soldier explained. "That's where they stretches 'em out; that's tlio dead blokes' room." There is quite a lot of talk about people exploiting the soldiers, but thero is at least one Wellington business man who has gone out of his way to offer concessions to "our boys." Mr. A. E M. Rowland, jeweller, 90 Manners Street, offers 15 per cent, special discount off all soldiers' requisites, such as wristlet -watches, binoculars, etc.—Advt.
