TRENTHAM RACES
CONCLUDING DAY
CHORTLE WINS BIG RACE
THE KELBURN PLATE
EGYPT TOO GOOD NONES
In glorious §ummor weather, the Weilington Racing Club's Cup Meeting was brought to a successful conclusion at Trenttiam yesterday. For an off day, the attendance was very large, and the big grandstand was packed with spectators as every raco was bping decided. Throughout the day, the totalisator staff was kept very busy, and by the time the machine closed down on the last race the invest* ments on the eight events had Teached the total of .£IO,OOI. This, added to the figures for the first two daya, made an aggregate of -£125,857 10s. for the meet, ing, as compared with the sum of ,£124,029 handled on the three days of the last Cup fixture. The racing track was again hard and fast, and the sport was of high quality. The spectators were not privileged to see Desert Gold in action again, 'as Mr. T. H. Lowry's crack three-year-old filly was withdrawn from the Kelburn Plate in favour of her full-brother, Egypt, who proved equal to the task of winning the race for Mr. Lowry. The principal handicap was won by Chortle, who was a warm favourite. Notwithstanding his welter weight, he covered the milo in exceedingly fast time. uhe Hack Welter Handicap, with which proceedings opened, was the best of good things for the light-weight Comely, who ran a much better mare than she did on the opening day. Otter, Tango, and Comely were prominent in the early pare of the race, but at the half-mile Comely ran to the front, and though Tango finished well 6he had.no chance of reaching Comely. Moulu got third place in the last stride, and then came Marsinah and Tirana.
Black Ada and Moulu, wore withdrawn from the Open Welter Handicap, leaving nine nwners. Sea Lord and Ararat were the public fancies. The latter rushed to the front soon after the start, and though he had to be hard ridden to 6tall off Combustion, he won all out by a length. Botanist was close up, and .then came Ararat, who finished very fast, Black Lupin, and Merrie Gain. Sarah Grand was the only defection from the Two-year-old Handicap, in which there were three brackets on the machine. "Tino Atua, who had the services of' Oliver, and was coupled with Carlatour, was the machine favourite." Sweet Tipperary played up at the barrier and delayed the start. When they jumped off the field zigzagged over the course. Carlatour was first into the straight, but Tino Atua was handy, and soon took charge, winning by half a length from Hyllus, who just cut Carlatom out of second place. (Menelaus was fourth and Elation next.
Chortle was a pronounced favourite in tie Summer Handicap, for which Emperador and Wishful were withdrawn. Down the back Taringamutu took charge after 'a beautiful start, and led First Glance and Recorder into the straight. Then Rewi Poto loomed lip, but at the distance Chortle took charge, and won very decisively. Gold Soult, who whipped the field down the back, finished fast in second place, a head clear of Eewi Poto, Findhorn, and Marco Bello, who finished in a line. First Glance failed badly, and ia evidently feeling the effeqts of her fall. Taringamutu is not a stayer, and' Flying Start does not finish on when up with the field in the early part of the race. Desert Gold, who is reported to be sore, was withdrawn from the Kelburn Plate, for which Nones and Hyttue were backed in that order. The latter ga.ro a lot of bother at the barrier, but got away well, and led with Egypt into tho course proper. In the run home the latter asserted himself, and won by half a length from Nones, who caught Hyttus in the last few strides.' \ Judging by the maohine, the Kaitofce Handicap was the best of good things for Limpet, bnt after looking all over a winner, Hydrus easily accounted for her In the straight, while Martyress was clear of the others in third place. Jean Laddo and Happiness were the next to finish. The Consolation Handicap provided one of the best contests ever seen on the Trentham course, and at the distance the eight runners wero in a bunch, and all had their names called. Wishful and Bertrada led down the back from Balboa, who was favourite, but at the half-mile the last-named retired. At the bottom of the straight Sir Solo, Indigo, Sir Alba, and Welcome Nugget ran to the leaders, and in a great struggle Sir Alba pot the verdict by a neck from Square Deal, wita Wishful a head away, and then came in a. heap Balboa, Sir Sob. and Welcome Nugget. Indigo was the last to pass the post. . The concluding event went to Centrf (coupled with Hyginas on the who defeated the top-weight, Tete-a-Teta with Sea Lord third and Chakwana next; The last-named looked to be winning at
the distance, but tired, and was beaten out of a place. RESULTS. WALLACEVILLE WELTER HANDICAP, of 200 sovs., ihe second horso to receive 40 sovs., and tho third horso 20 sovs. from tihe stake.
