A French official communique states; "After mine explosions and a violent bombardment a German attack at Neuville St. Vaast penetrated several hundred metres of our first-lino tranches, and reached our supporting trench. 'Our counter-attacks, immediately launched, dislodged the enemy, who, by the afternoon, only held' two hundred metres, forming a salient in our lines. Our curtain of fire hnd our machine-guns inflicted heavy losses on the attackers. . . - - "Two aviation squadrons, including twenty-four machines, bombarded the 'railway station and barracks at Metz. They dropped 130 bombs. The bombarding aeroplanes were escorted by two protecting of which the pilots lought. ten actions on the. way with 'Fokkers' and 'Aviatiks.' Our machines were violently bombarded throughout, but all returned safely except one, which was obliged to land' south-east of Metz,"
