A "BILLY SUNDAY" JEHAD
GERMAN SPY'S SCHEME FOR A HOLY WAR CAMPAIGN. By-Telegraph—Press Association—Ciopyrltrtit ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) London, January 23. The New Tork "American" publishes a boastful letter from Ignatius Treibieh Lincoln, the "self-confessed .spy, explaining that he is going to Central Asia to rouse the Mohammedans against the Allies, preaching a Holy War ("jehad") on tho methods of "Billy" Sunday, tho Temperauce advooate. [llie Rev. Wm. ("Billy") Sunday is America's latest evangelioal craze—and she has not a.few. "Billy" Sunday casts all the conventions of the orthodox pulpit to the winds, and literally takes liis coat off when he addresses himself to the task of rousing an audience. His exhortations are full of slang—popular American slang with a "punch"—and his references to tho Deity are tinged with a familiarity of expression that would shock, more reverent ears elsewhere. Possessed of an abundant supply of personal magnetism, and a fluency of idiom and apt phrases, lie has an extraordinary hold over huge audiences, and his hie revival tours in the States have provided the American Press with columns of controversy as to his methods —whether they be of transient or permanent value; whether "Billy" is merely a platform quaok or an intensely earnest apostle.]
