The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald left for u airoa yesterday. 'lhe Hon. J. A. Hanan is in the Auckland district. He will probably be back m Wellington to-morrow. Mr. Justice Hcsking, who has been on a visit to Australia, returned to Wellington by the s.s.Moeraki yesterday. Captain M'Haffey, of the Royal Army Medical Corps, who has been 011 6emce at Habaui, was a passenger by tho Moei'aki, which arrived at Wel- N lington from Sydney yesterday. He is on a health-recruiting trip. • Captain Appleyard, of the _ Union Stoam Ship Company, arrived in Wellington from Sydney by tho s.s. Moeraki yesterday. Captain Sir R. J. M. Walker, of the Coldstream Guards, is 011 a visit to Auckland. He will probably take up an appointment on the Defence Staff. • Mr. J. R. Samson, ofiicer-in-charg& of the Defonce Information Department, is leaving to-night for Dunedin and InVercargill on Departmental business. Mr. G. S. Leedor, assistant borough engineer in Napier, who has been accepted for active service, has been granted leavo of absence by the council. A Dunedin Press Association message states that at a largely-attended meeting of of tho Mornington Presbyterian Church it was decided to call the Rev. W. Trotter, of Greymouth. ' Mr. W. T. Healy, of Brooklyn, has received news that his son, Pte. M. Healy, who is serving at the front with the Queensland forces, is in hospital at Alexandria, suffering from frontbite. Mr. J. W. Tibbs, Rector of the Auckland Grammar School, is at present in Wellington, - having arrived here from Hobart by the Wimmera. on Saturday Mr. Tibbs will attend the meeting -of the New Zealand University Senate.' Mr. John Greenwood Clayton, a Government veterinary surgeon, who had been in ill-health for a considerable time, . died at his residence in Wallace Street on Sunday. Deceased -was a native of Ireland, and went through the Boer War, settling in New Zealand about fifteen years ago. He leaves a widow, but no children. Since the outbreak of tho war Mr. Clayton had done valuable work in connection with the purchase* for the Defence Department. Dr. A.' Martin, of Vivian Street; has returned''from his holiday. Mr. R. S. Abraham, chairman of directors of the Taupo : Totara Timber, Company, Mr. A. Strang, Mr. G. J. Munro,' of Palmerston North, and Mr. R. M. Sinclair, of Wellington, directors of the company, have just completed a visit to. the Lake Taupo district. The party inspebted.the whole of the country that is likely to be developed by the proposed extension of the company's railway to Lake Taupo, and travelled from Waiouru to the lake, thence to Mokai, and down th©. line to the Main Trunk. A Press Association message from Auckland states that Mr. W. G. Asliford, Minister of Lands'and Agriculture of New South Wales, arrived by the Makura yesterday. The principal object of his visit to the Dominion is to observe what the Government'is doing in regard to afforestation. ,
The death of' Mr- Lancelot Indermauer, district officer for the Ellice Group of Islands,, and Deputy _ Commissioner of the Western Pacific, is recorded in the "Samoan Times." He was a Cambridge graduate, and ivas formerly a barrister and solicitor at Tonga.
' Lieutenant A. T. G. Rhodes, Aide-de-Camp to-.General Godley, has just been promoted captain in his regiment, the Grenadier Guards. Ho' 'reached England a few days ago with Ms father, Mr. A. E. G. Rhodes, having travelled as far as Teneriffo to meet • him.
