MANUFACTURE OF RENNET

A' TABANAKI, SUGGESTION, (By Telegraph —Speoial, Correspondent.) _ ' Hawera, January 21. A a* meeting of tho .Ta'ranaki Executive of 1 tho Farmers'. Union to-day the chairman referred to the fact that Mr. Cuddie had said ■ that there., was likely ta be a thortage of roiihct for cheese-, making, and he, thought that they,-'as' farmers, or rather as dairy companies, should do something' in 'the matter for themselves. It was' not ;an elaborate process, the main thing' was to secure a supply, of calves' veils or stomachs. At tho present time a great many tolves were killed in Taranaki, and the custom amongst farmers was to knock i a, few calves on the head and let them J lm until they had sufficient for a forenoon's skinning. To save the veils, however, skinning; would have to be done straight away,/which might inconvenience theso farmers to a certain'extent, and to compensate them for this the dairyycompanies might' recompense them. The dairy companies would liayo to consider- making it worth. the suppliers" while saving the veils, _ and if; this; were done, some of the big companies having 2000. to 3000 cows would very soon accumulate a lot of material 1 for the ; manufacture of • rennet. It might not be enough to fill the wholo bill,' but it would materially augment the supply obtained from other, sources. It would be a serious tiling for New-Zealand-if there should happen to bo a shortage in tho supply of rennet. . Eventually it was resolved /that the executive" draw the attention of dairy companies •to \-tho threatened shortago of rennet and suggests that a pieeting •'of-''dairy;. representatives be held ; at' 1 an early date with the view of dealing with- the matter. - 1- It was. further decided that Mr. Cuddie bo asked to ' supply all tlie information possible in regard to the manufacture of rennet, nature of, and cost of buildings required,-and whether there .were-people in New Zealand capable of ihanufacturing it.
