The Russians have penetrated and captured a section of the onemy front in Bukowina, north-west of Czernowitz. At the same time they are still pursuing the Turks upon whom they lately inflicted a heavy defeat in the Caucasus, and their action in this region is-now seen to practically coincide with a resumption of active operations by the British forces on the Tisgris. The weather in Mesopotamia lias moderated, and tlio column advancing to relieve Kut-cl-Amara is reported to' be now within seven miles of that place. There is no word of the recently-predicted attack by the enemy upon the Allies at Salonika. On the contrary the Bulgars are said to be ing defensive precautions, as if themselves apprehending an attack, and it is reported that Austrian and German troops are being moved north, away from the Greek frontier. Extracts are given from a re- ■> port by the New Zealand official correspondent describing .the action fought in Western Egypt on Christmas Day.
