RAILWAY FATALITY AT PETONE. Whilst engaged in shunting operations in connection with tho goods train arriving at Petone shortly after 7 o'clock last evening a porter, named J. Chapman, who had only been a few days at the station, fell between some wagons and was killed instantaneously. Tho local police and Dr. Harding were rapidly on the spot, but the latter could only pronounce life extinct. The body was removed to tho Morgue by tho police on tho 7.30 train. The deceased, who is bolioved to have a mother at AVellington, was a single man, aged about 27 years. FOUND DROWNED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, January 20. An inquest on the bodies of the threo children, Vera, Olive, and Sam Mumford, who lost thier lives by drowning in the pond at Riccarton Racecourse yesterday afternoon, was held to-night. A verdict of found drowned was returned, and there was no blame attachable to anyone. Mr. Wanklyn, secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club,, stated that he wotdd take steps to have all the dangerous spots around the lake fenced off with wire-netting. LITTLE GIRL DROWNED. Dunaclin, January 20. Margaret Florence Cook, aged nine years, fell off a punt at Sawyer's Bay yesterday, and was drowned. . ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED. Auckland, January 19. William Manning a flax cutter, aged 43, fell from a- puint at Rangitaiki outlet and was drowned. _ At the inquest it was stated that deceased sajik in fifteen seconds. A vcrdict of accidentally drowned was returned.
