A etatement supplied to a northern newspaper by a man with business congestions in the South Sea Islands shows bow, in 1908, German agents were at work in Tahiti ostensibly trading, but Tftally in pursuance 01 a commission from the German War Office. Trading ■under a French name, the German company showed remarkable activity in acquiring land at tho chief harbours of 'Tahiti.- About the same time there' came from Samoa Herr Schultz, of tho German Government. He was said to he on a short visit for health, Iwt stayed sis months with Herr Coppenwrath. He became mixed np in the" land purchasing scheme. Tho death of Herr Oopponwratih revealed tho fact that the German land jobbers had in their minds neither copper nor motber-of-poarl, but, acting on behalf of tho German Government, were, as fast as opportunity could be found, acquiring tho island by bits, particularly sites most valuable from a naval and military viewpoint. Entries, for Messrs. I),algety and Co.'s J/Cvin stock sale am advertised in. this issue.
