A Wanganui resident who spont the Christmas holidays on tho West Coast of the South Island gives a very inter-esting-account of a race meeting he visited there. A special stand was set aside for tho inmates of a mental hospital in the locality, who attended in force and enjoyed the day to their hearts' content. Among themselves they betted in millions, aud contributed in no small measure to the scene of oxcitement which marked tho conclusion of each race. One of tho "visitors" had a friendly wager of £1C(T,000 with a brother patient 011 the last race, and when his fancy failed to see the distance cut he was heard to remark that a man must he mad to tried to selrot winner# on Serm on any XeaJa-tw raoeoourM.
