ANTI-CONSCRIPTION
AN ILLUMINATING EPISODE. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Christchurch, January 20. _ In connection with the Anti-Conscrip-tion Conference, the ::"Times" and "Press" this morning print facts concerning the appointment of a delegate from the local Grocers' Union to oppose conscription. The delegate wa-s appointed at a meeting at which 20 were present out of a membership of 130,, no notico being given. The majority of the members are furiously indignant. They havo been blocked by technicalities from rescinding tho_ appointment. It. is stated, and not denied by the wirepullers responsible, that the uiuon as a whole is hostile to the conference. The "Press" and "Times" both print editorials on the subject, pointing out that as tho case is doubtless typical, the conference cannot in any sense be representative of unionism, and its resolutions may be ignored by the Government and the public.
