CONITSRiBNCE OF BACKERS. By Telegrapli.—Press Association, Auckland, January 19. A conference, tuider the auspices of the Native School Teachers 5 Association, was opened to-day, those present including Sir Edward Oibbes, Secretary for Education. In the course of a, speech, Sir E. Gibbes expressed the view that the present Minister of Education would take aJi early opportunity of making a tour of the schools. Native school education bad been distinctly well carried out under exceptional difl'icnlties. "Had it not for the influence of the teacher," said Sir Edward,- "the Native race might nave become a menace to the community instead of the useful adjunct which it was now being piuved to bo;" (Applause.)
