CITY WATER SUPPLY

A SERIOUS INTERRUPTION,

A serious interruption of the water supply occurred iu the City yesterday. In some cases, this amounted to a total failure of the supply, and the inconvenience entailed was naturally considerable. Before the cause of the trouble could be ascertained a close examination had to be made of the whole system. It. was explained last night that an excessive draw-off from the whole City system had resulted in the omptyiug of the Bell Road service reservoir, winch regulates the pressure throughout- tho City, with the result that that pressure was greatly reduced; The maximum rato at which water was coming in during the daylight hours of yesterday was really in excess of what it was a few days ago, before this trouble occurred. The water camo from the Wainui-o-mata reservoir, but the pressure in tho City could not bo nmmtained, because, as stated, thu; 801 l Road service reservoir was empty, this notwithstanding the fact that a considerable quantity of water from tho Karori reservoir was turned on. it may bo mentioned that tho average daily consumption from tho Wainui-iHiinta reservoir during tho prosbni summer months has iwcu 5,300,000 <!all->ns, and there is, '« iitidilion, the supply from the Karori reservoir, which is probably close upon 500,000 gallons. Tho authorities urge upon the residents the importance of refraining from any waste of water, pointing out that if this precaution is obsorved matters will be quickly and satisfactorily remedied. It is expected that a full service of water will be available by, 6 o'clock this morning. •
