ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
ACCIDENT AT A RAILWAY CROSSING. Our Masterton correspondent reports that a serious accident occurred at tlio Upper Plain railway crossing at a lato hour on Monday night. An engino with a guard's van attached, was proceeding to the 'l'aratalii at 11.30 o'clock, when a young man named Robert W. Hogg, an employee of the Bank of New South Wales, who was returning to town 011 a motor-oycle, dashed into the rear of the van. The engine was at once pulled up, and it was discovered that young Hogg was lying unconscious. A doctor was summoned, and found that the right arm was badly crushed, there were nasty wounds 011 the scalp, and minor injuries had heen sustained. The sufferer was removed to the Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate tho" arm at tho shoulder. He is now progressing as favourably as the circumstances will permit. FALL PROM A STAIRWAY. By Telcsranh—Press Association. Auckland, January 18. Alfred Ricard Brings, an elderly man, had a fall from the stairway of a restaurant, and was admitted to tho Hospital suffering from a deep cut in the head. He is in a critical condition. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Auckland, January 18. 'A 1 seaman named Thomas Crawley, aged twenty-five years, was found in the harbour in circumstances that point to attempted suicide. He was rescued, and complained that he had not been permitted to drown. He asked for a dose of poison, and said he had boon refused work and was tired of life. ' " . A FATAL FALL. Auckland, January 18. A boatman named William Ans< combe died in the hospital of injuries sustained by falling from a ladder on the wharf. He was a widower, fiftythree years of age, and had been employed by the Harbour Board for some years. YOUNG MAN DROWNED. Woodville, January 18. A young man named Harold Wood lost his life in the Manawatu River at Kumeroa this afternoon. He and a younger brother went into bathe, and the elder brother soon got into difficulties and sank. Oonsta,ble Tanner left for the scene of the accident with an expert diver for the purpose of recovering the body. SURF BATHING FATALITY. Greymouth, January 18. A double drowning fatality occurred at South Beach this afternoon. A number of persons were surf bathing, Constable Dillon, with Nurse Regan, being a considerable distance out. Nurse Regan got into difficulties, Constable Dillon attempted a rescue, and both were drowned. Dillon's body has not been recovered. The nurse's body was brought in and artificial restoration was unsuccessful. Constable Dillon was a single man, 32 years of age, with no relatives in New Zealand. Nurse Regan was formerly in Ohristchurch.
