PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Petono Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) pre-' siding. Two deputations waited on the council in reference to the half-holiday question, and two petitions were presented. He Saturday petition had 102 signatures, and the Wednesday petition 100 signatures. After hearing both deputations, Councillor M'Kenzie moved that a special meeting of the council be called to rescind the resolution carried by the council at its last meeting, fixing Saturday as the half-holiday to be observed, and that a poll of electors be taken to determine the closing day for the stops in the district, such poll to be taken in the year 1917. Councillor Anderson supported tie resolution, and on being put to the meeting, the motion was lost, Councillors M'Kenzie, Forsyth, and Anderson voting for it. The Mayor informed the deputations that the council had decided to adhere to Saturday being the weekly half-holi-day.. Nine applications were granted for public hall licenses, one for a billiardroom, and one for a second-hand dealer, The Greymouth Borough Council asked the council's co-operation in urging the Government to publish the names of those who are not prepared to act in any capacity in connection with the war/ It was resolved to reply stating that the council could not support the matter. The Wellington City Council, replying to a complaint made by Petone Council re Hutt Road, stated that it did not consider there was justification for the complaint, as the whole of the road had been receiving attention. It was decided to reply, stating th&t the answer sent was not in accordance with fact, ami the council would write to the Board of Control.
