UNKNOWN WORKERS UNION

NATIONAL AGREEMENT WANTED,

There. was a large attendance at a special general _ meeting of the •'Wellington Waterside Union yesterday morning. The meeting was held for the purpose, of considering- t'he employers' communication re increase in wages, improved working conditions, and the recommendations of the union executive. Mr. F. Curtice, president of t'he union, presided. The. following olficial report\of the meeting was lianded to the Press:— The communication from the employers re meeting them re a rise in wages and improved conditions was discussed, and the following resolution was carried unanimously"That as the Waterside . Conference asked tlie employers to meet the representatives of tlie unions who comprised the conference, this union stands unanimously by the decision of the couforence in favour of a national Agreement." t Mr. Roberts, secretary pf the federation, stated that lie had been on a visit to the-South Island, and all tlie unions there were unanimous on the question that they would not meet tlie employers locally. He also stated that the unions lie had visited intended notifying tlie employers to tbnt effect. Sir. L. Glover, president' of the .Waterside Workers' Federation, who has returned from a visit to the north, stated tliat New Plymouth and Gisborne Unions had also decided to bo represented nationally. Auckland was endeavouring to secure a local agreement, but had not yet arrived at a final decision, Th& Napier Union was making arrangements to meet the employers at that port for tlie purpose of discussing local, conditions. The following unions have joined the federation as reconstructed: —Wellington, New Plymouth, Gisborne, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Timaru, Oarriaru, Port Chalmers, and» Bluff. Subsequently a meeting of delegates from the various section's, representing coal, deep-sea, intercolonial and coastal, slip-workers, and Harboar Board casual employees, was lield to draw up schedules of improvements in the present working conditions, also to anpoiiit a representative' from each section to meet tbe employers at a later date, together with tbe officials of the federation.
