LIQUOR AT HUTT PARK

LICENSE '.GRANTED FOR THE .... TROTS. A special meeting of the Hutt Licensing Committee was bold at Petohe yesterday, w'hen there were. presnt: Messrs. J. Cudby,' J. W. M'Ewan, M. .Welch, and H. Ryder. 'Mr. Cudby was appointed acting-chairman. The meeting was called to consider an application made by H. J. Palmer for a conditional licenso for one day, to be, used at tho Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on January 21'. Mr. "J. J. M'Grath'appeared in support of tlie application, Mr. H. Grinstead asked for. permission to/enter a protest on behalf of tht Hutt No-Licenso League. Mr. M'Grath objected, pointing out that as tho applicaion was for a con-' ditional licenso for one day, and could be granted by tho chairman and two members, no one had any legal standing in entering an objection. After some deliberation, in which Mr. Welch objected to any protest being heard, tile committee agreed to hear Mr. Grinstead. ' Mr. Grinstead stated' that he was secretary of the No-License . League, and read a protest from that society. 'Jliey conidered that an increase of licenses was totally opposed to tho well-being of tho district, and that a largo sum was' spent annually in the consumption of liquor at such tv timo when every penny was needed for other purposes. * Mr. M'Grath stated that the Trotting Club had taken a lease of the Park, on the distinct understanding that a clause in the lease originally prohibiting tho salo 'of liquor on tho Park, should bo deleted. Referring to Mr. Grinstcad's. objection, Mr. M' Grath said that tho Di-ntost represented a small minority of tho community. Amongst those who .would visit the Park wero_ highly-re-spectablo people, and tills object of obtaining a license was not to benefit any person or society, but to satisfy'tho wonts of tho community.
