MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MAINTENANCE ORDER Among the oaSes heard before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday morning was one in which a young man named Frederick Charles Davis t was charged with failure to provide adequate maintenance for his wife and two children, lie was not represented by counsel, and did! not attempt to deny the charge. Sub-Inspector Mackinnon stated that tho police bad taken the case lip becauso the complainant had 110 money with which to obtain legal assistance. Tho defendant had left lis wife penniless on two occasions and had treated her very cruelly. She had instituted proceedings on a previous occasion, but bad dropped- them at the request of the defendant.

Tho Magistrate made an order against Davis for the payment of 30s. per week. MEAN THEFT. Thomas Meyers was sent to gaol for a montli for stealing a blanket, valued at Bs. 6d., the property of the Salvation Army. It-, appeared that he had bpen given a. bed for the night by tho Army authorities and had walked oft' in the morning with' one of the blankets. ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE. Joseph Thurston, who, through being arrested for drunkenness, was absent without leave from the steamer Kia Ora, was ordered to forfeit two days' pay and to return to tho vessel. REFUSED TO QUIT. At the Pier Hotel on Wednesday Joseph Harvey refused to quit tho public bar when requested to do so by a servant of the licensee, and he aggravated the offence by using some very had language. Yesterday lie plead'ed guilty to both these charges laid against him in court, and was lined a total sum of £4. In default of payment he will have to spend a month iii ga^l. OTHER CASES.

Georgo William Jackson, against whom there were several previous convictions for drunkenness, pleaded guilty to a further lapse and also admitted having twice entered licensed premises during the currency of a prohibition order. His fines with court costs totalled £3 145., the alternative being seven days' imprisonment. Johann Gorzellik, for drunkenness, was fined 10s., in default to undergo 48 hours' imprisonment. Mary M'Elegney, who appeared on remand on a charge of drunkenness, was further remanded until this morning, in order that arrangements might be completed for her return to friends. Three first-offending inebriates were also dealt with.

Thompson was ordered'to pay £11 3s. Od. to Geo. Remington and' Co. on or before March 9 next, in default to undergo seven days' imprisonment: Harold Oliver was ordered to pay £4 15s. to Frederick L. Dean on or before March 9, in dofault to undergo seven days' imprisonment. John Wheeler was ordered to pay £6 15s. to Charles Duncan on or before February 10, in default to undergo seven days' imprisonment.

BREACH OP AWAJRD. The Inspector of' Awards (H. E. Moston) claimed a pGnalty of £10 from Stavely and Weight for a breach of tho Dairy Employees' Award, in connection with the employment of a boy at less than the minimum rate of pay. Mr. A. W. Blair appeared for the defendants and admitted the breach. Judgment was thereupon given for plaintilf for £3.
