COWS AT THE PAIL
GREAT PERFORMANCES It ACE FOR WORLD'S RECORDS 'The breaking of tho world's yearly butter record by four different cows within tho last year has been, probably, : ' : ,-the most wonderful achievement ever t'-recorded;',in tho history of the live stock industry \ (says Mr. Harold M'Alister ■ ill "Hoard's Dairyman"). The mark I has iiow been set so high 1 by tho latest world's champion, Duchess Skylark ! Ormsby, it would seem impossible ever.-to exceed it, yet when it is coni , 6idered .that tho w-orld's record has been broken twelve different times sinco ■ 1 1895 thero seems to bo no limit to what - a cow may produce in a year. In tho past 20 years thero has been an increase i ..-'in. the'highest yearly, record of from i 632.781b. fa tto 1205.091b. fat, or rn ■ • ancreaso of 130.4 per cent.. In no other ; ■ division of /animal husbandry has there I ■ been mado imoro than a small portion i :of the woiifclerful progress as has been v recorded ; iu the official butter records f of tho /different breeds, and'■nowhere f- olse ha:s tho standard of the great producer s of a breed been raised so high j labo'vo ' "the common level."
The. first great yearly butter record made under the Babcock test was that of the Holstein cow, Belle Sarcastic, 632.761b. fat from 21,07-s.Sib. milk in 1895, just twenty years ago'. ' In 1897 Belle, Sarcastic increased her. former record to. 721.61b:' fat from 23,189.61b. milk. i In 1903 the championship passed to tho .Guernsey breed by tho production of, 775.691b. fat from 14,009.91b. milk in'a. year by Imp. Princess Rhea. In 1905 the world's record was broken l>y, another Guernsey, Yeska Snhbeam, with 857.151b. fat from. 14,920.81b. milk in a year, being the first cow to make over 10001b. commercial butter in a year. /■ . •' i 1u,1907 the supremacy was regained for the-Holstein breed - by Colantha 4tli's Johanna, with 998.261b. fat from 27j432.51b. milk in a year. This, cow is-noted for being the . only cow in tlio world 'to Tiold all butter, records' from ono;day'to;one, year at the same . time, fche also broke the world's milk record for a .year,'being the only cow outside oi Belie Sarcastic to ever. accomplish this. feat. . Her record at that time exceeded the nearest Guernsey by 141.11 lb. fat and the highest Jersey record by 280.46 ib, fat, and the second highest ■Holstein by :276.661b. fat.: .
Colantlia ith's Johanna's record was eo great that it was thought by many that, it would ' never be exceeded, yet since that time' seven cows have broken tho world's record,'or more cows in the following 1 eight years than in. the preceding twelve years. ./ I : There has never been, however, nor will there probably : ever be, another cow that will • exceed . tile . former world's record by such a wida margin as; did Colantlia 4th's Johanna. She held the record for over four years or' longer -'than any -other-cow has ever held it l since 1903.' In 1911 she was surpassed by 191b. fat by another Holsteiri cow, Pontiac Clothilde DeKol 2nd, who made 1,017.281b. fat from 25,3181b. milk in-a year. She. also broke the seven and thirty-day butter records during her yearly test, being the last cow" m. the world io accomplish this achievement. In 1912 the record was broken by the: Holstcin cow, Banostine Bells Do Ivul, .who made 1,058.341b. fat from 27,4U4.4!b.' milk in a year. . After -holding the world's butter record for seven .years, Holstcin breeders 'were rudely shaken from their dream of supremacy by the fact that'' May Rilma had brought the. honours to tho' Guernsey breed by exceeding Banostine Belle De Kpl by 151b. fat, making 1,073.411b. I'at from 16,6731b. milk in a year. Then, to add to the discomfiture of adherents
or other breeds, another Guernsey cow, Murno Cowau, exceeded May ltilma's record by almost 2olb. fat, giving 1,098.181b. fat from 24,0081b. milk in a year. This gave the Guernsey breed, in tho first half of the present year, two cows that produced more butter than a cow of any other' breed. Hardly, however, was Murno Cowan's record finished when the sensational Holstein junior three-year-old, Findcmo Holingen Faync, broke all world's butter records in her class and the world's record for any age from 90 days to 365 days, completing her yearly test with 1,116.051b. fat from 26,612.05 lb. milk. Yet her record was soon ex cecded by 60.421b. fat by her stablemate, Finderne Pride Johanna Hue, who mawe 1,764.471b. fab from 28,403.7 lb. milk in a year. This wonderful cow gave, in almost the last month of her yearly test, 117.6471b. fat from 2,437.21b. milk in 30 ..days; or 5.681b more butter-fat than She gave in hei best 30 days during the first part of hex test, showing an example of' unequalled persistency. It has just been announced, how-* over, that the yearly record of Finderno Pride Johanna Rue lias been surpassed by 28.621b. fat by another Holstein tw, Duchess Skylark Orrnsoy, who made 1,205.091b. fat from 27,761.7 lb. milk in a year.. This great -,o\\ averaged 3.301b. fat from 76.11b. milk every day, 23.131b. fat from 532.71b. milk every week, and 99.121b. fat from 2,2831b. milk for every thirty days throughout the whole year. AVhen it is considered that it takes an exceptionally good cow to produce even 3.31b. fat on her best day's work, the greatness of Duchess Skylark Ormsby's work for the entire year can be appreciated. . Thero have been so many great records made in the iast year,, it is interesting to review the highest yearly fat records of eaoli. breed.
