A man nanied_ Edward John Hayes smashed. his wife's head with an axe. Her condition is serious. He cut his own throat with fatal results. The couplo had bad frequent quarrels, and after a row on Tuesday Hayes left the house. He returned early this morning, smashed in the window with an axe, and entered the room in which his wifo was sleeping with six of their eight children, one of wliom unavailingly tried to ward off the blow which was aimed at her mother. A note in Hayes's pocket referred to family troubles and his intention to kill his wife. NEW SOUTH WALES WHEAT OUTLOOK. GOVERNMENT STATISTICIAN'S REPORT. (Rec. January 13, 11.50 p.m.) . Sydney, January 13. The Government Statistician's latest estimate_of the New South Wales wheat crop is 5,166,400 acres sown, of which 4,175,000 are reserved for grain, yielding 62,050 bushels. Allowing ten per cent, for the farmers, and possible over-esti-mates, the balance represents the lowest production which might reasonably be expected. . On this basis, forty million bushels will be available for export. Eight hundred and seven thousand acres are under hay—estimated to vield 1,220,000 tons.

A proclamation prohibits tho export of goods to China and Siam, excepting t-o specified receivers in those countries.
