A Christchurch paper states; "A passenger by tlio firsc express refused to allow a returned wounded soldier to share a cab with him to the railway station. 'Cabby' was imlignairt, but a wholesome dread of the traffic inspector and probable consequences deterred him from acting as lie felt inclined to—depositing liis passenger's luggage on tlio footpath and tellinq liiro to walk. However, he delayed liis departure for tlio station till lie had procured a conveyance for tlio soldier.". To tliis a Runedin paper adds: "We are only sorry that our Christclmrch contemnornrv did not oillorv this individual bv publishing his full name, for wo would lio.ve had much pleasure in. giving him tho benefit of a, gratuitous advertisement." First Recruit: "What do you think of tlio major, Bill?" Second Recruit: "He's a changeable kind o' bloke. Last night I says to 'ira, ' 'Oo goes there?' ail' 'e says, 'Friend!'; ail' to-day 'o 'ardly knows me."
