The malady takes many .forms, and differs much, in its various stages of development. The blood becomes charged with impurities. and little granules form, which find lodgment in constricted portions of tho veins, near the joints and under 'cartilaginous bands or ligaments. Being viscid or sticky, little granules stick together as they strike each other. On» lodges in a. narrow place in a. vein. Another presently comes along and sticks to it. Then another and another, until the pile begins to press on the nerves and causes pain. Sometimes tlie swellings assume huge dimensions, and one after another the joints become cemented over until they are perfectly rigid.
