THE 12TH DRAFT
CITY SHORTAGE WELLINGTON MILITARY DISTRICT QUOTA SENT IN The mobilisation of the 12th Reinforcements began yesterday. Taranaki and Wellington men marched through the City streets during the morning on their way to commence their training. The City Infantry, bound for Trentham, were preceded by the sth Regiment band, and the march was witnessed by a large number of people. Once again tlio spectators included a plentiful supply of cli«iblc-loojring young men, who may read with interest the statements which follow regarding shortages of recruits with whom to reinforce the wen who are fighting the country's battles.
The men who went forward were of very good stamp, and are about up to the. high physical standard set by the preceding drafts. They were of suitable age, taking them on appearances, being neither unduly youthful, nor too far 011 toward middle age. There was a heavy shortage when tlie Wellington meii mustered. This is the third big shortage the City has experienced with recent drafts. A few months ago a draft was sent away about 70 men The quota for the Eleventh Reinforcements mustered 94 short, and yesterday the men for the Twelfth were 78 short. No official explanation of the big defalcation is offered.
Tlie following table shows the position of yesterday's draft: — 1 Sent to -Quota. Camp. Shortage. T ■ ' 1 — > 209* 181 78 The City n.c.o's for the 14th draft were sent to camp at tho same time, and they came forward.in full strength. In addition to the existing infantry shortage, 38 other infantry are required by the Defence authorities, and the whole have to be sent to camp by January 18. The men the City now wants are, therefore:— Mounted 18 Infantry 92 Engineers 5 Total 110 The Eugineers required include ,a mason and a blacksmith.
DISTRICT POSITION. 1 ALL GAPS FILLED. Notwithstanding- that the City had a shortage of 78 men. the Wellington Military District put up the excellent 1 performance of sending its quota in almost complete. The City failed to the extent of 50 in the infantry arm, but the district as a whole has sent in the whole of the infantry required of it. The mobilisation was so worked by the staff at district headquarters that the City shortage was anticipated and an extra call made oh other groups. Manawatu, Hawke's Bay, and Wairarapa saved tho situation. The only branches in which the district was slwrt at the end of the day were the Mounted Riflos and the Engineers. Thero was lack of a dozen mounteds and eight engineers, but all these were secured during the day, and are ready to go into camp next week.
The men actually sent in by tho five groups were; — 6 rt n3 w rt * rt 15 £ C> £s rt 55 a a T 4 2 S ■&•§ 3 a Cm.
