Lodging Allowance for Returned Men. Camp Orders state: It has been approved to pay lodging allowance of 2s. per diem to all returned soldiers that come under any 1 of the following categories:—(a) As invalids or convalescents. being treated under private arrangement; (b) as convalescents under treatment as hospital out-patients; (c) as .convalescents on sick _ leave. Tins allowance is not to be paid to soldiers whilst on ordinary leave at their own homes. The allowance will be retrospective, and those who think they are entitled to it should make application to the Q.M.G., 4 Brandon Street, Wellington 1 . Mounteds at May Morn. The only occupants of the May Morn Camp at present are 150 men. of the Ninth Mounted, who were kept back for special service in connection with a large draft of remounts. Some of these men state that on impression has got about that they have been detained aB a form of punishment. Such, however, is not the case, a fact which the Camp Adjutant made clear when he ordered them to undertake their special duties. The Eleventh Infantry, who were at May Morn, returned to Trentham on Monday, and the main camp is now occupied by the Eleventh and Twelfth Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, and Signallers, as well as the N.C.O.'s of the Thirteenth. Busy at Remount Depot. Since the Defence, Department recom. menced the purchasing of horses of the hack, half-draught, and three-quarter-draught "types, the remount depot at Upper Hutt has become a busy place. As the recruits who are to become soldiers are. put into uniforms and trained at Trentham; so at the depot the longmaned, long-tailed, civilian horses are trimmed into a general uniformity, and licked into shape as troop horses, gunhorses, or teams for army wagons.' Bays, dark roans, chestnuts,' and hlacks are the colours approved for military service, with few or preferably no outstanding white markings.

Settling Down. Soldiers who have passed through the training. of the camps appear to be agreed that it ie in the second week that the recruit really settles down to the life. At first_ the feeling that the change from civilian life is only temporary prevails. But with the making of new friends and the bustle and interest of soldiering, the sense of permanence comes. One of yesterday's recruits wa3 a big bualiman, sunburnt, brawny, and calm. After he had donned his uniform and made up his palliasse with straw, he sat on the hutment stepa ajid smoked contentedly. "Well, mato," another recruit said, "how d'y©. like it?" The big man blew a cloud of smoke, and replied: • "It's better than ohoppin' bush." Other Matters. Major D. E. Cardale, N.Z.S.Q. instructor, Mounted Rifles, who hail been spending some time in Russell recuperating after a breakdown-in health, has returned to Wellington. ' Staft'-Sergt.-Major Bates, who has been oil the staff of t"be Defence Office at Rangiora for over four years, lias received notice of transfer to the Trentbam Camp, and will leavo to-day to take up his duties there.
