HEROIC LIFEBOATMEN
CREW RESCUED IN GALE. During heavy storms around tlio coast of England in November, the Deal and Rainsgatc lifeboats performed gallant work. In terrible weather the crew of a ship wrecked on tlio Goodwin Sands were rescued by Deal lifeboatmen. ' Hearing the firing of numerous guns and rockets from tlio Gull lightship, the Deal moil launched their boat at six o'clock in the morning. The Ramsgato lifeboat, with a tug, also put out, but the Deal ■ boat arrived first. They found the steamer Elysian stranded, with mountainous scijs sweeping over Her, and with her crew of II huddled up on deck. The lifeboatmen, at considerable peril, veered their craft alongside, and, although they themselves were continually swamped, they managed to save tlio entire crew, and landed them at Deal amid the enthusiasm of hundreds of people who had assembled. The Deal lifeboat was also launched with difficulty to aid the Italian sailing ship Tjoeli Carve, of 1C53 tons, which had been driven on Brake Sands, off Deal. One of her lifeboats was washed ashore. She had'her rigand sails damaged, and lost both anchors-and chains. As the sea was moderating, the crew remained on board. The Ramsgate lifeboatmen wero first needed to take out the crew of a steam trawled which had gono ashore in Pegwell Bay. After landing them they received another call.
