H.M.S. KING EDWARD VII STRIKES A MiNE NO LIVES LOST The High Commissioner reports: London, January 9, 8.45 p.m. "Tlie Admiralty announce that the battleship Xing Edward VII struck a mine, and owing to the heavy sea sho had to be abandoned. She sank shortly afterwards, with no. loss of life, only two men being injured." H.M.S. King Edward VII (16,350 tons) belongs to a class of nine battleships,.completed between 1904 and 190G, the sister ships being tlie Zealandia (ex Now Zealand), Britannia, Dominion, Commonwealth, Hindustan, Africa, and Hibernia. Each is armell with four 12inch, four 9.2-inch, and ten 6-inch guns, with the naval minor armament. Their complement is 820 men each, and their cost was £1,450,000 each. "WONDERFUL DISCIPLINE!" A DASH FOR FREEDOM BRITISH STEAMER'S ATTEMPT, Stockholm, January 9. The British steamer Gitano, 1170 tons, which has been in refuge at Norrkoping (in Sweden, 90 miles south-west of Stockholm) since the war, slipped out on New Year's Day, followed by Swedish torpedo boats. A German torpedo boat tried to capture the Gitano in Swedish waters, but the Swedish torpedo boats forced it to desist! \ The Gitano reached Malmoe and left- again for Gothenburg, to roach which port sl.o must cross a small stretph of international water, where many German warships are lying in wait. THE MINED ITALIAN STEAMER. Cettinje, January 9. The Italian steamer which was mined had on board 425 Montenegrin recruits from America.
