It is supposed to be produced from tho bark og a tree. Mr. F. H. Elcoate, of tho staff of tho Bank of New South Wales in Masterton, has received notice of, his promotion to the position of accountant at the Oamaru branch of tho bank, and will be leaving in a. few days. Mr. and Mrs. Elcoate will be greatly missed, particularly in musical circles. Mr. W. R. Bagnall, a member of the New South Wales Legislature, Js at present a, guest of Mr. W. H. Jackson in Masterton. Another batch of fifteen recruits left Masterton on Saturday morning for tho Trentham Camp. movement is being made in the direction of the formation of a Soldiers' Club in. Masterton.

The excellent way in which the French railway systems have aided, and are still aiding, the operations of the French and British armies is shown by some particulars published by "Engineering." The circulation on the Orleans Railway system from August 2 to 5 of last year amounted to 1500 trains, and that on the Paris-Lyons-Mediterranean system to over 3000 trains. The East of France system, besides having to deal with heavy military transports immediately hostilities commenced, had to remove from the Briey and Longwy districts 40,000' foreign workmen, mostly Italians, employed in the' iron-mines of those districts. As an illustration of the conditions which obtained in tlio early days of tho war, it may be stated that from August 6 to 19 of last year the Orleans railway system carried up to the .front •54,000 tons, of various provisions.
