Wo counter-attacked, and recaptured the town, which wc have held firmly since.; Our troops on th Middle St-rypa captured sections of the enemy's position, taking over a thousand prisoners. Desperate enemy counter-attacks with large forces north-east of Czernowitz were all repulsed with enormous enemy losses. THE MAIN ATTACK ON CZERNOWITZ. (Rec. January 9, 5.5 p.m.) Petrograd, January 8. The Russians' main attack on Czcrnowitz was preceded by a bombardment by four hundred g\ms for fifty'hours, during which time they rained shells continuously. An infantry charge followed immediately. The Tsar has taken up his headquarters in tho vicinity. ■ AUSTRIAN ESTIMATE OF RUSSIAN LOSSES. (Rec. January 9, 5.5 p.m.) Amsterdam, January 8. An Austrian' communique says: "It is estimated the Russians lost, fifty thousand in the New Year's Day fighting on the Bessarabian frontier and at St-rypa." IF RUSSIA'S OFFENSIVE SUCCEEDS. (Rec. January 9, 5.5 p.m.) London, January 8. Count Reventlow, writing in the "Tages Zeitung," says tho Russian offensive in Bessarabia has been well prepared -with great reserves of men and artillery. If the offensive succecds Greece and Rumania will join tlie Entente.
